Description: This Spring 2014 conference will create a forum for technologists, social scientists, NGOs, and policymakers to exchange tools for measuring low-income communities’ preferences, demand, and willingness to pay for new technologies. It will focus on consumers at the base of the economic pyramid who are routinely excluded from traditional markets. When new technologies are deployed in these communities, how do we know if consumers are benefiting? In the absence of well-developed markets and price signals, how can NGOs and governments assess user needs and demand? Participants will explore both qualitative and quantitative techniques for identifying “needed technologies” and examine how novel technologies or social innovations can be designed for scale.
